Progress Column

My Progress column this week was about Baroness Thatcher: http://www.progressonline.org.uk/2013/04/11/labour-let-thatcher-happen/

Yes, the problem with Margaret Thatcher is that she was not opposed strongly enough when she was alive.

"We should have helped council tenants become homeowners"

Depending on the details, this is an okay idea. Buying council houses became attractive though, in part, due to the big increase in rents. Selling the houses could have been a way of raising money to build more houses.

Foot was wrong to support the Falklands War though. It was a reckless gamble that could easily have ended in disaster. Several of the ships were hit by bombs that failed to go off. It was really the war to save Thatcher's face.
