Council By-elections
Five tonight, some great results for Labour:
Sawley Division, Derbyshire CC. Lab gain from Ind. Lab 1351 (41.7%, +30.9), Con 1197 (36.9%, +12.8), LD 692 (21.4%, +10.7). Swing of 9.1% from Con to Lab since 2009.
Lytchett Matravers Division, Purbeck DC. Con gain from LD. Con 669 (52.7% +6.1%) Lib Dem 599 (47.3% -6.1%). Swing of 6.1% from LD to Con since 2010.
Peckham Ward, LB Southwark. Lab hold. Lab 1754 (70.1%, +7.8), LD 554 (22.1%, +3.2), Con 86 (3.4%, -5.1), TUSC 63 (2.5%, +2.5), Green 46 (1.8%, -4.3). Swing of 2.3% from LD to Lab since 2010.
Churnet Valley Division, Staffordshire CC. Con hold. Con 1063 (52%, -1.9), Lab 491 (24%, +4.4), UKIP 316 (15.5%, +15.5), LD 173 (8.5%, -18). Swing of 3.2% from Con to Lab since 2009.
Horbury & South Ossett Ward, Wakefield MBC. Lab gain from Con. Majority of 715. Lab 1776 (51.5%, +2.2), Con 1061 (30.8%, -10.5), UKIP 232 (6.7%, +6.7), LD 200 (5.8%, -3.7), Ind 93 (2.7%, +2.7), Ind 88 (2.6%, +2.6). Swing of 6.4% from Con to Lab since May this year.

Labour's victory in Derbyshire was good. A good candidate and a good campaign.
The loss of jobs at the nearby Bombadier factory was neing raised by voters towards the end and would have been a motivational factor for voters.
I'm not sure to what extent the evolving news on the scandal wasa factor - I didn't pick it up on the doorsteps.
But you do wonder to what extent results in 2009's County Council elections would have been different if the Police had chased down the scandal before June 2009 with the same vigour as "cash for honours" and the media would have been able to report on phone message hacking as well as parliamentary expenses. http://www.labourblogs.com/public-blog/michaeledwards/29811/
