Council by-elections

Last night's results:

Brinsley Ward, Broxtowe BC. Con gain from BNP. Con 416 (40.9%, +40.9), BNP 288 (28.3%, -15.7), LD 224 (22%, +22), Lab 68 (6.7%, -22.9) UKIP 21 (2.1%, +2.1). Swing of 28.3% from BNP to Con since 2007. Bizarrely, Ashfield CLP didn't run a campaign in a ward they could have won.

All Saints Ward, Cheltenham BC. LD hold. LD 680 (58.2%, -0.9), Con 395 (33.8%, +0.2), Green 57 (4.9%, +0.4), Lab 37 (3.2%, +0.3). Swing of 0.6% from LD to Con.

Denton NE Ward, Tameside MBC. Lab hold. Lab 1258 (47.8%, +2.3), Con 660 (25.1%, -11.3), BNP 358 (13.6%, +13.6), UKIP 193 (7.3%, +7.3), Green 164 (6.2%, +6.2). Swing of 6.8% from Con to Lab since 2008.

Is it just me or, having read your council election results for the past year, are the national polls not repeating at a local level? The local authority results last month aside; it just seems from your reports that as many times as there is a Tory gain there are swings to Labour or the Tories lose seats to LDs, or the Tory swing is relatively low. There certainly seems to be no steady series of seats turning blue (except of course in by-elections which, er, aer kind of count more and thus possibly completely scupper my argument.)

So far in 2009 there have been 172 by-elections. The Tories have had a net loss of 14, Labour a net gain of 1 and the LDs a net gain of 12.

Of course, the Greens won two by elections last week let alone over the last year :)

Of course one of those was a county council seat so that might be why you've not counted them both in the Tory losses.

Anyway, only wanted to say good to see the BNP losing a seat.

The whole system needs restructuring capitalism is finished! If we are to benefit the environment jim then surely we can't stay with this wasteful capitalist system.

Just like computer viruses are made by major software makers so you always have to buy anti virus software other products are only designed to last 5 years to keep companies afloat the whole system must change new labour and the greens don't have this agenda yet!
