The Mayoral election in Hackney - a tight battle between Labour and Not Voting

Another day, another ward, another canvassing session.

This time that bit of the huge, and due to be demolished and regenerated, Woodberry Down Estate (next to Manor House Tube) that's in Brownswood Ward.

120 contacts of which:

Labour 44
Ken for Mayor but Lib Dem for Assembly 4
Labour for Assembly but anti-Ken 1

Not Voting 38
Undecided 17
Against Labour 15
Lib Dem on Mayor and Assembly 1
Conservative 0

Wherever Boris is getting his votes from next week, it doesn't seem to be Hackney.

Out here in Croydon we do actually find Boris supporters - but surprisingly not as many as we had expected at the start of this campaign. The Labour vote is holding up very well. Ken is a great motivating factor, as he always has been.

The suburbs are supposed to be Boris homeland territory, but its certainly not the mirror image of Hackney.

Even Coulsdon, on the edge of London has a good number of Labour supporters and Ken fans. (a £30 million Bypass was paid for by TfL).

Roll on Thursday!

I would say the opposite to be honest. It's hard to find Labour supporters.

This week will truly showshow scandalous this government has become. Rotten to the core and probably the worst government in history.

It has been revealed that the government bank bailouts will remain secret even after 30 years. So secret are the details that they will never be seen by the public eye. Some are even saying that the banks may not ever have to pay this money back?

What a Labour government this is. They screw over the poorest workers yet use tax payers money to bail out the banks to the sum of over £100 billion. Forgetting the fact that these banks have made billions previous to this. Does the tax payer now get a share of future profits of these banks. We do at the end of the day now own £100 billion share in these banks.

This is vile Luke and I'm appalled at how this government views our money. It's not your bloody money it belongs to the tax payer.

They should have let these banks burn and then nationalised the lot when they were worthless.

Disgusting..truly disgusting.

Rich

you are clearly economically illiterate. If the economic system went down - as it would if the banks were hit, lots of other businesses would follow - inflation would spiral out of control and unemployment rise dramatically - meaning that there were far more people in absolute poverty in the country.

Clearly seeing the bigger picture is not one of your strengths

They're telling you they'd vote Labour to get you off their doorsteps.

I'm sorry anonymous, but Rich has a fair point here. We're not talking about the banks going out of business, we're talking about them scaling down lending.

It was telling that when the Council of Mortgage Lenders were trying to sow panic at the disco a fortnight ago to bounce Gordon into ponying up some readies they could only come up with a figure saying 'net lending will half this year'.

Net lending! That means that in the middle of a so-called credit crunch, we're still borrowing more than we're paying back. We have to get a handle on that, a year or two where net lending is a minus number would be no bad thing.

Sure, it'll hurt the economy in the short-term, but bubbles go pop eventually, no matter what you do - and the longer you keep blowing them, the more likely you are to get soap in your eyes.

£100bn in loan guarantees would be well used to support companies researching and delivering GM crops, alternative energy, or practically anything that isn't the growing farce of believing we can all get rich by selling our houses to each other.

Well, Rich, do you really expect labour supporters to converse with a BNP canvasser?

I'll tell you where the Tories are getting their vote from, suburban areas, Lynton Crosby had it all planned out, they aren't making noise in Central London to keep Labour voters at home while mobilising the hell out of the suburbs. I'm actually scared of what's going to happen, been canvassing like crazy but not sure we got it right this time around. Fingers crossed and as SV says roll on Thursday! we are going to put a hell of a fight!
