Huhne's opposition to Trident

Chris Huhne quit the Labour Party to join the SDP in the early '80s. One of the big motivations claimed by the SDP splitters was that they objected to unilateralism.

Strange then that Mr Huhne is running for Lib Dem Leader on a platform of unilaterally ditching Trident.

Or perhaps he is just a complete opportunist.

Hardly. The current situation is very different.

The only similarity is that it was a waste of money then, and a waste of money now....no doubt those in the pay of the utterly immoral war industry wouldn't agree!

I don't think Michael Portillo was a fully-paid-up CND-er in the early 80s either.

The arguments take their time to filter in to some of the thicker heads. I shall be looking forward to your application for Labour-CND membership some time in the next millenium, Luke! ;o)

Gordon Brown was anti-Trident in the early 1980's.Likewise your previous mentor T Blair.Huhne is not being opportunist - he just happens to be right.
PS:Next thing you'll be calling Vince Cable opportunist for not attending the Saudi state banquet. Personally, I'm glad some MPs still appear to have principles....shame they're both Lib democrats

Buff may be an opportunist but then again he may not be a unilateralist either. Doctor Dunc and Grim may care to look at the small print of the Huhne mendacity. He has not ruled out a different deterrent under the next Huhne government. Trident is famously awesomely expensive after all - more so than other variants.

I'd like to think a few Labour and even one or two Tories would not support dining with the Sauds even with a very long spoon. Dizzy was giving me a right manic right wing telling off all day yesterday over it.
