Good stuff from Brown

Brown saying:

There will be a housing minister attending Cabinet (Cruddas?)

Harman is party chair as well as DL - so not DPM? She looked pleased.

Douglas Alexander will be GE Co-ordinator (any bets on a September 2007 election?)

NEC to set up policy forums in every constituency

OMOV decision on manifesto

More power to Parliament

Local govt to be strengthened

Looking like a distinct possibility- regional office is on Eastbourne's back to select a PPC, and in the past we've been left to the last moment as a "teeth cutting" exercise for aspiring next-time MPs.
The Lib Dems certainly seem to be gearing up for an early election (maybe Gordon mentioned something in his cosy chat with Ming...)

Douglas Alexander in charge of the UK General Election campaign?? This is so, so, unreal given the utter shambles of a recent Scottish election he presided over (according to several Scottish MPs, caused).

Some important Scottish players were alleged to be sharpening their knives for revenge. Hence, there is one thing you can read into Brown's appointing Alexander to the UK election post - that it at a stroke must silence any Scottish Party critics of him.Any such critics will be charged with being 'disroyal, parochial or missing the 'wider picture'. This appointment does not bode well.

yvette not cruddas for cabinet.

and cruddas will get a job on party reform - something hazel should have done whilst she was party chair, but took the membership for granted.

I agree. Yvette not Cruddas. Perhaps Cruddas will get No 2 there or in CLG. Or perhaps even soem kind of deputy chair or back up there.

OMOV on Manifesto? What does that mean? A detailed priorities ballot and complex nuanced survey of views?

Or a take it or leave it Yes/No on the cobblings of the stretegists and thinkers.

Douglas Alexander may or may not be responsible for the logistical problems in Scotland but in party political terms the result achieved was good from where we started out.

Cruddas deserves a big, proper job and I hear negotiations are well underway. He invigorated the contest and was brave.

Harriet? Not all that pleased, I don't think! But less displeased that Gordon, I fear.

No bets at all on September 2007!

Power to the people/regions? hope so, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Today's papers are saying Cooper's leaving housing to go elsewhere. Gordon should do the right thing and appoint Cruddas as his new Housing Minister.

Chris paul have you joined the party-in-denial-about-the Scottish-situation?

You said "in party political terms the result achieved was good from where we started out". Crivens, from where 'we' started out? Like you mean like started from complete Labour dominance for decades??

There's every sign since the Scottish election that the entire Labour movement just cannot come to terms with what has happened. Almost the only visible evidence of any kind of reaction has been (I'm sorry to have to say) 'Lord' George Foulkes; every intervention he has made serves to reinforce the apparent inability of the Labour Party to respond and adapt to the new Scottish political situation.

Oh, and you also said that "Douglas Alexander may or may not be responsible for the logistical problems in Scotland". There is little doubt that it was his baby and wholly his. He was Brown's placeman put there to 'manage' the Scottish campaign and this was quickly picked up on by the Scottish voters and media. That is why I suspect that he has now been moved to safety from retaliation (or just desserts as some might put it).

An early election is an option; a better option might be to wait and see what happens to the Tories. If they can be pushed into ditching Cameron, palpably splitting and moving to a distinct right-wing line, that might be the time to strike.

Let's not forget that, if you read conservativehome.com, that they've selected most marginal seat candidates, backed them with cash and been out door-knocking hard. We need some time to redress that
